Turning to open source GIS solutions
When the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) had determined that existing proprietary software capabilities no longer meet their needs on the development of their GIS Web Services Hosting Environment, they turned to open source geospatial software, supported by Boundless, for increased functionality, interoperability, flexibility and cost-savings, while contributing new features to GeoServer and OpenGeo Suite.
NOAA developers were experienced members of the open source community, recognized the value of open source software development and were familiar with the virtuous cycle that funding development spurs and. NOAA, both through funding contributions and by developing new code on their own, is an active participant
in the open source software development process.
