Flexible. Limitless. The Cloud-Native Geospatial Server is Here.

Boundless empowers customers to scale without limits with its new enterprise server technology.

As the volume, variety and velocity of geospatial information increases, organizations are challenged to extract maximum value from this data using traditional, proprietary GIS software. Modern IT architectures require that a GIS environment be elastic to scale up or out to meet changing needs, without penalizing customers through inflexible licensing fees or confusing credit models. To meet this challenge, we’ve developed Boundless Server Enterprise™, the first cloud-native geospatial server designed to maximize value of geospatial data in elastic and cloud environments.

Beyond Existing Capabilities

For years, Boundless has supported the premier open source geospatial server project, GeoServer, as part of our subscription offerings. Boundless Server™, as a commercially supported version of GeoServer, set the standard for how geospatial data is published as OGC web services.

Now, Boundless Server Enterprise better enhances support for the visualization and analysis of data streams while providing high-availability and clustering in modern, elastic architectures. Boundless Server Enterprise provides a foundation of statelessness, simplicity, and scalability.

Born in the Cloud

While Boundless Server Enterprise was designed for the cloud, it also lives in the cloud – with the cloud’s changes. Sometimes servers fail.  We embraced this reality when we created Boundless Server. Failover was once handled and supported by configuring duplicate server architectures and keeping those derivatives in sync, in case one goes offline. With Boundless Server Enterprise, and deploying the technology within a modern devops architecture, failover can be configured across nodes in a matter of seconds, not minutes or hours. This means true failover, giving you the redundancy and assurance your enterprise requires.

Note that changing the number of users requesting maps results in Boundless Server Enterprise dynamically adding/subtracting nodes to increase/decrease the number of maps served in response to the changing demand versus the static capacity of a single Boundless Server node.

Simple Things Scale, Complex Things Fail

Boundless Server Enterprise embraces simplicity as a means to streamline deployment, scale, configuration, and maintenance. Gone are the days of installing web application containers, WAR files, and editing configuration files hidden deep in a folder structure. Boundless Server Enterprise is delivered as a single, self-contained executable file, complete with common extensions bundled together. This enables Boundless Server Enterprise to scale up or out to meet performance demands, or to support an unanticipated spike in user requests. With ease of configuration in mind, everything from port numbers to workspace settings can be quickly updated through a fully versioned and centrally managed configuration service.

We’ve tested with hundreds of nodes inside Docker Swarm, Kubernetes, and Pivotal Cloud Foundry, each proven to handle millions of requests with no sign of slowing down. The result: a geospatial server that can support millions of layers at explosive speed. That’s Boundless Server Enterprise!

The Result

Deployments that scale efficiently and quickly can better respond to spikes in usage. The better we can match the resource curve to the traffic curve, the closer we get to perfect efficiency and the lowest operational cost to meet demand. This can result in big savings on your cloud provider bill. Scale up and out to thousands of high-performance server containers that meet demand, and provide redundancy and failover, without paying for duplicate server licenses as with proprietary software.

And the best part? Boundless Server Enterprise does not leverage per core/seat/instance licensing typically seen in proprietary software. Rather, Boundless Server Enterprise is available for a fixed cost through an annual subscription. This empowers you to scale up and out as needed, and doesn’t penalize you for success.
